Uses of FUNCTIONS (F1 - F12) Keys in Windows

In normal windows keyboard the top row of keys that contains F1 - F12 numbers known as FUNCTION KEYS. It does not matter since how long time you used the windows keyboard but i am sure that most of you still do not know the use of all function keys that are F1 - F12.

These Functions keys can make your computer work a bit easier if you properly know the functioning of all these keys.

NOTE  - Some keyboards have fn (Function) keys associate with them, In this type of keyboards F1 - F12 keys will work after pressing the function key.

For Ex - (fn + F1)

 

Use of F1 key -

  1. Opens the help page of the working program
  2. At booting time F1 key use to enter in the BIOS.
  3. Windows + F1 open the windows help center.
  4. In Google Chrome, Opens the Chrome help center.

Use of F2 key -

  1. Rename the chosen application, file or folder.

  2. Alt + Ctrl + F2 – Opens the Document as a Microsoft Word.
  3. Ctrl + F2 – Opens the Preview window in Microsoft Word.
  4. Also use for enter the BIOS setup.

Use of F3 key -

  1. Search feature for many programs including web browsers.
  2. In MS-DOS or Windows command line F3 will repeat the last command.
  3. Shift + F3 will change the text in Microsoft Word from upper to lower case or a capital letter at the beginning of every word.
  4. Win + F3 – Advanced Search window opens in Microsoft Outlook.

Use of F4 key -

  1. Repeats last action performed while typing in Microsoft Word.
  2. Open Find tool in windows XP or lower version of Windows.
  3. Ctrl + F4 – Closes the window open in the present window, for example, a tab in the program
  4. Alt + F4 - Close the active windows.

Use of F5 key -

  1. Refreshes (updates) pages in web browsers and other applications.
  2. Open the find, replace, and go to window in Microsoft Word.
  3. Running a slide demonstrate in Powerpoint.
  4. Shift + F5 opens performance on mozilla firefox.

Use of F6 key -

  1. Moves cursor to writing web address at the address bar.
  2. Ctrl + Shift + F6 opens to another open Microsoft Word document.

Use of F7 key -

  1. Normally opens a “spell checker” but this key can be reassigned, depending on configurations and software.
  2. Turns on Caret browsing in Mozilla Firefox.

Use of F8 key -

  1. It can perform several functions, and does not have an assigned Windows default. However, when starting Windows 2000 or Windows XP, holding the F8 key will boot in Safe Mode.
  2. Lock the typing in Microsoft word. (Reactive by Backspace key).

Use of F9 key -

  1. Opens the Measurements toolbar in Quark 5.0.
  2. Refresh Microsoft Word Documents.

Use of F10 key -

  1. Activates the menu bar in many programs. Shift + F10 + mouse can be used for an external function.
  2. Shift + F10 – works same as the right mouse click.
  3. Pressing F10 while your system is booting will show you BIOS Information.

Use of F11 key -

  1. Sets to full screen on most of the programs and modern internet browsers.
  2. De-activate full Screen.

Use of F12 key -

  1. In Microsoft Word, this key can be used for saving documents.
  2. Opens up developer tools window in most of the browsers.
  3. Most of the newer computers that allow PXE Boot, this button allows users to boot from the network.
  4. Shift + F12 – Saves a document in Microsoft Word.
  5. Ctrl + Shift + F12 – Prints a document in Microsoft Word.
  6. F12 key will open up Inspect element box in any Browser.
